Car floor mats help protect the carpeting and floorboards in your vehicle from snow, ice, mud, dirt, that might get dragged in on your shoes. Unfortunately they're also very expensive. You can save a lot of money while still protecting your vehicle if you're willing to take the time to make your own car floor mats. It only takes a few minutes to make each mat from a piece of heavy carpeting.
Steps
1 Measure your current floor mats or, if you have no floor mats, measure how long and wide the exposed area is in front of each seat to estimate the proper sizing.
2 Cut the carpet pieces into the approximate size and shape you need with heavy duty shears or cutters.
3 Place each floor mat in the place it's supposed to fill and, using the permanent marker, mark where any excess material needs to be cut away. Keep in mind that floor mat shapes might differ from front to back or driver to passenger sides of the vehicle.
4 Trim excess material away and check to see if your new floor mats fit properly in their designated places. Mark and trim excess material again if necessary. Make sure that the floor mat in front of the driver's seat does not bunch up behind or underneath the gas, brake and clutch pedals.
